The One Thing That Could End MEGADETH, According to DAVE MUSTAINE

Megadeth has been going strong for four decades, led from day one by guitarist, vocalist, and founding member Dave Mustaine.
He’s the only constant in the thrash metal band’s long history and the driving force behind many of its best-known songs, including “Peace Sells,” “In My Darkest Hour,” “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due,” “Symphony of Destruction,” “A Tout Le Monde,” and “Trust.”

Band’s Future Still Looks Bright
Despite the band’s long run, Mustaine says there’s no end in sight, at least not yet. In a 2023 interview with The Jeremy White Show (as transcribed by LOUDLEGENDS.com), he explained that he’s still in good health and feeling positive about Megadeth’s future.
“I’m sure [the end] will happen at some point. I just don’t see it right now. I feel good, my health is good,” Mustaine said, in comments also published by Revolver Magazine.

What would cause the band to stop?
According to Mustaine, it’s not about age or touring fatigue, it’s about his voice.
“The only thing that would be strange is if I got to a point where I had to stop singing,” he said. “Even if I could still play, if I couldn’t sing… since Megadeth was built on my voice, I don’t think it would go on. I think if I wasn’t singing, I’d be fooling the fans. Not that I’m some amazing singer.”
Looking Ahead While Acknowledging Time
Mustaine admitted he’s been thinking more about Megadeth’s legacy as time goes on.
“There’s a lot to think about as we watch the sun rise on our career, because for a lot of my peers, it’s already setting, or it has set. But it feels like the sun is still rising in Megadeth’s world,” he said.
Though Dave acknowledges the inevitable conclusion of the band’s story, he offers no timeline.
The future of Megadeth, it seems, rests not on record sales, streaming metrics, or shifting trends, but on the wear and tear of one man’s vocal cords.
