As I Lay Dying has rolled out their latest offering, “Whitewashed Tomb,” a mid-tempo track that gives a preview of their upcoming album, Through Storms Ahead, slated for release on November 15. Accompanying the single is a music video crafted by directors Tom Flynn and Mike Watts—a slick production that screams, “We mean business,” though perhaps a tad too polished for its own good.
Tim Lambesis, the band’s frontman, described the single as a marriage of melody and aggression, with a so-called “modern twist” courtesy of producers Phil Sgrosso and Hiram Hernandez. In Lambesis’ words: “Phil’s demo had these melodic-metal vibes with a darker undertone, so I ran with the metaphor of a whitewashed tomb—something that looks clean on the outside but hides something much darker underneath.” Poetic, sure, but one wonders if this is just another way to say, “We’re balancing soft and heavy because it works.”

Ryan Neff, their bassist and one of the newer recruits, apparently brought his own vocal flourishes to the track, emphasizing its contrasts. Does it work? That’s up for debate. But the idea of blending “clean and dirty” isn’t exactly breaking new ground in 2024.
The band’s current lineup features Lambesis and Sgrosso, joined by bassist Neff, drummer Nick Pierce, and guitarist Ken Susi. Let’s just say they’ve had some, ahem, “personnel adjustments” over the years. Still, they’re pushing forward with the release of Through Storms Ahead, available for pre-order via Napalm Records.
For fans itching to see them live, As I Lay Dying kicks off their European tour next month, joined by Caliban, Decapitated, and Left To Suffer. With a stacked lineup like that, at least the crowd will get their money’s worth. Tour dates are below.
