Marilyn Manson is scheduled to perform at the FENAPO, the National Fair of San Luis Potosí, on August 10 at the Teatro del Pueblo, with free admission. However, the Catholic Church tried to shut it down.

The controversy began when Archbishop Jorge Alberto Cavazos Arizpe sent a letter to local authorities urging them to cancel the performance.

As reported by Infobae, the archbishop accused Manson’s music of promoting evil and criticized the state government’s apparent inconsistency:

“The same government talks about banning drug cartels, so how can we allow events that mock faith and religious beliefs?”

Governor Ricardo Gallardo responded by defending the decision to move forward with the concert, saying San Luis Potosí is a place that “shouldn’t have borders or divisions.” Speaking to El Universal, Gallardo added: “We’re no longer living in the times of the Holy Inquisition, when artistic expression was banned.”

He also underlined that the state maintains a secular stance. According to Gallardo, his administration supports both religious traditions, such as the Silence Procession and temple restoration projects, and artistic events featured at the fair.

This year’s lineup also includes DJ Tiësto, Belinda, Grupo Frontera, Los Tigres del Norte, Banda MS, Reik, Bronco, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, and Los Ángeles Azules.

Marilyn Manson recently returned to the spotlight after facing a string of ongoing sexual misconduct allegations still playing out in court.

His comeback included the 2024 album One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1, which peaked at No. 32 on the US charts, his lowest placement since his 1994 debut, Portrait of an American Family.
