First look at upcoming album

My Mind Is a Mountain was the first preview of Private Music. Fans and critics have described the track as loud, chaotic, and sharp-edged, very much in line with Deftones’ past work.

The video, while simple in structure, offers a glimpse of what the band’s upcoming tour may look like on stage.

The album was recorded in multiple cities, including Malibu and Joshua Tree in California, and Nashville, Tennessee. The band worked once again with Grammy-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz.

This marks their third time collaborating with him, following 2010’s Diamond Eyes and 2012’s Koi No Yokan.

North American tour details

To promote Private Music, Deftones will head back on the road starting August 22.

The tour begins in Vancouver and will continue through arenas across the United States and Canada.

Some notable dates include a stop at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland on September 10, Ball Arena in Denver on September 15, and a final show at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on September 17.

Support acts will vary across dates. Phantogram and Idles will join as direct support on select stops, while Barbarians of California will open every night.

Longtime success continues

Deftones have had a busy year. Their recent headline tour, their first since 2022, was a sellout across every date.

They played large venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York, TD Garden in Boston, and held a two-night run at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

In a review of their Los Angeles show, Los Angeles Times wrote, Deftones have never been bigger, or more definitional for what young people want out of heavy music in all its gradients.

The band’s catalog continues to earn new accolades. The White Pony album was recently certified double platinum by the RIAA. Diamond Eyes earned a platinum certification. Singles Change (In the House of Flies) and Be Quiet and Drive reached four-times and two-times platinum, respectively.

According to the band, the new material explores themes like nature, mental resilience, and spiritual reflection. The album is said to be a mix of psychedelic elements and heavy, crushing sounds. It continues the band’s style of mixing dreamlike atmosphere with aggressive riffs.

Lineup changes

Deftones’ current lineup features Chino Moreno (vocals), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), and Frank Delgado (keyboards and samples). Touring bassist Fred Sablan also appears on Private Music.

Sablan joined the group after Sergio Vega’s departure in 2022. He made his live debut with the band that same year. Before joining Deftones, Sablan played with Marilyn Manson, Chelsea Wolfe, and Peter Hook and the Light.

Vega, who was a member of Deftones for over a decade, left following disagreements over contracts. In a social media video, Vega explained that he was never made an official member and could not agree to the terms being offered. In his words: I’ve been on the same “deal” since I started in 2009. It was never about money. It was about belonging.

The band also added second guitarist Lance Jackman to their touring lineup. Jackman is known for his work in several Sacramento-area bands, including Eightfourseven and Will Haven.

Private Music will be the band’s tenth studio album. It follows 2020’s Ohms, which earned two Grammy nominations and was praised for its return to form. Deftones, formed in 1988 in Sacramento, California, have built a reputation for mixing heavy music with experimental elements.

They have often avoided sticking to one sound, shifting from nu-metal to post-rock and everything in between. Despite changes in the music industry and evolving trends, Deftones have remained one of the most consistent acts in the alternative metal scene.

Their focus this time, according to those close to the project, is clarity. The 11 songs on Private Music were crafted with tighter arrangements and a leaner sound. Fans can expect less meandering and more precision.

The new album is available for preorder now.
