Deftones are officially back. The California alt-metal band has announced their new album, private music, and dropped its lead single, “my mind is a mountain,” along with a brand-new music video (watch below).
This is their first studio album in five years and will be released August 22 via Reprise/Warner Records. The track is now available to stream on major platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.

A long-awaited return
Deftones last released a full-length album in 2020 with Ohms. Since then, the band has been relatively quiet, only teasing new material on occasion.
Earlier this week, fans started speculating after the band posted cryptic messages on Instagram. These included blurry photos and phrases like “why do we bathe in this psyche” and “remain calm in our mental.” Turns out, they were hinting at what’s now confirmed, a brand new album cycle.
On July 10, “my mind is a mountain” premiered exclusively on Apple Music’s Zane Lowe show. Members Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham, and Frank Delgado sat down with Lowe at Canter’s Deli in Hollywood to talk about the album and what fans can expect from the new era.

What does the new single sound like?
“My mind is a mountain” offers a blend of the band’s signature intensity with a fresh burst of energy. The song features fast-paced drums, haunting harmonies, and a wall of sound that builds from start to finish.
Some people have compared the vibe to earlier albums like White Pony and Around the Fur, though with a more polished, modern twist.
Id say it’s a powerful opening move for what’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated rock releases of the year.
Here’s the full private music tracklist:
- my mind is a mountain
- locked club
- ecdysis
- infinite source
- souvenir
- cXz
- i think about you all the time
- milk of the madonna
- cut hands
- ~metal dream
- departing the body
Where it was recorded, and who helped
The album was co-produced by Deftones and Nick Raskulinecz, a name longtime fans will recognize. He worked on 2010’s Diamond Eyes and 2012’s Koi No Yokan, both of which are considered fan favorites.
This time, the sessions took place across California and Tennessee, in spots like Malibu, Joshua Tree, and Nashville, giving the band space to explore new sounds while keeping familiar textures intact.
Guitarist Stephen Carpenter said the album feels like a continuation of both Ohms and Koi No Yokan. Listening to “my mind is a mountain,” that comment makes sense. There’s a clear evolution, but it’s still recognizably Deftones.
Upcoming tour kicks off in August
To support the release, the band will hit the road again starting August 22, the same day private music drops.
They’ll begin the North American tour in Vancouver, British Columbia, and hit several major cities across Canada and the U.S., including Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Denver, and Atlanta.
Opening acts vary by date. Phantogram, IDLES, and The Barbarians of California will join the bill on select shows. The band is also scheduled to perform with System of a Down in Toronto on September 3 and 5.
