Dream Theater's MIKE PORTNOY Defends LARS ULRICH: 'He Takes a Beating, But He's Invaluable'
Despite criticism, Portnoy argues Ulrich’s contributions go far beyond what critics acknowledge.

Mike Portnoy, drummer for Dream Theater, says Lars Ulrich deserves more credit.
In a recent chat with El Estepario Siberiano (transcribed by LOUDLEGENDS.COM), Portnoy explained why he thinks the Metallica co-founder is often misunderstood.

“He takes a beating, but he’s invaluable,” Portnoy said. “There’s way more to being a good drummer than precision and technique.”
Ulrich has faced criticism over the years for his playing style. Some fans focus on missed beats, tempo shifts, or less-than-perfect fills. Portnoy doesn’t see it that way. For him, Ulrich’s value comes from everything else he does.
“To me, his value is not necessarily in drumming,” Portnoy explained. “He was part of a musical revolution. He helped start something new.”
According to Portnoy, Ulrich was more than a drummer. He was a creative force, a decision-maker, and a key part of Metallica’s rise. He took part in songwriting, album production, setlist creation, and even managed fan clubs and merchandise.
“He was the leader of the band,” Portnoy said. “That’s what inspired me.”
He also highlighted Ulrich’s onstage personality. Portnoy prefers drummers who bring energy and presence. That matters more to him than flawless technique.
“I’d rather watch somebody like Lars Ulrich than a guy doing quadruple paradiddles at 240 bpm,” he added. “I want to smile when I see someone perform.”
Portnoy noted that Ulrich’s style during Metallica’s first four albums taught him a lot. He described that era of drumming as progressive and aggressive, shaping the way he approached metal himself.
Despite what critics say, Portnoy sees Ulrich as a full-package performer. He believes charisma, leadership, and artistic vision are just as important as speed or accuracy.
“I don’t care if his fills are slightly sloppy,” Portnoy said. “He brings something essential to the music.”
