Marilyn Manson’s surprise appearance, albeit virtual, during Black Sabbath’s farewell concert on July 5 has sparked a wave of criticism from fans online and at the venue.
The shock rocker didn’t take the stage in person, but a pre-recorded video tribute to Ozzy Osbourne was aired during the Back to the Beginning concert in Birmingham, England, and not everyone welcomed the gesture (watch below).

The concert, held at Villa Park, marked the end of an era for Black Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne reunited with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward to close the chapter on the legendary metal band’s 50-year career.
The lineup of performers was packed with heavy hitters, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Alice in Chains, Pantera, and others joined the send-off. Between sets, screens displayed video messages from artists paying tribute to Ozzy and Sabbath’s legacy. One of those messages came from Manson.
In his brief video, Manson, real name Brian Warner, said, “It is a great honor to be here via this video, and I’d like to say congratulations, and I love you very much, Ozzy.” His tone was calm, even affectionate. But the crowd’s reaction was anything but.
Booed at the Show
According to reports from multiple outlets, including Billboard and The Independent, several people in the audience booed when Manson’s face appeared on the screen. Some even turned their backs. A few fans shouted angrily. While the clip was short, it left a lasting impression, and not a good one.
Social media lit up almost immediately. “F that guy he’s a r– piece of s,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Disgraceful that he is on this otherwise outstanding Black Sabbath show,” posted another. Reactions ranged from disappointment to outright disgust.
The backlash is tied to a series of abuse allegations that have followed Manson for several years. Though no criminal charges have been filed, the controversy around him remains a hot topic.
Legal History and Public Reaction
Manson has faced lawsuits from multiple women, including actress Esmé Bianco and his former fiancée, Evan Rachel Wood. The allegations include sexual assault, domestic violence, and emotional abuse. Manson has denied all of the claims and, for a time, pursued a defamation lawsuit against Wood. He later dropped the case and agreed to cover her legal fees.
Earlier this year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed it would not file criminal charges against Manson. According to the DA, the alleged incidents occurred between 2009 and 2011, and the statute of limitations had expired. Additionally, prosecutors said they lacked sufficient evidence to pursue charges.
Despite this legal outcome, the court of public opinion hasn’t moved on. Many fans still associate Manson with the allegations, and his public image has taken a major hit. He was dropped by his record label, his talent agency, and his longtime manager. Concerts have been canceled, including the first date of his One Assassination Under God tour in the UK, which was scrapped in June after protests and political pressure.
Manson’s Connection to Sabbath
Manson’s inclusion in the Back to the Beginning concert wasn’t completely out of the blue. He’s performed at Ozzfest several times, in 1997, 2001, 2003, 2017, and 2018, and has often spoken about Ozzy Osbourne as a key influence on his career. Still, according to Billboard, it appears Manson wasn’t formally invited to participate in the live show. His video message was reportedly a self-submitted tribute.
That distinction didn’t stop people from voicing concerns about his presence, virtual or not. The contrast between the celebratory mood of the night and Manson’s sudden appearance was jarring for many. The show was meant to honor a band that helped shape heavy metal, and instead, the moment turned into a lightning rod for controversy.
No Comment from Manson’s Team
As of now, Manson’s representatives have not issued a statement in response to the backlash. Given the sensitivity of the situation and his ongoing efforts to relaunch his music career, it’s unclear if they will.
The Back to the Beginning concert itself was widely praised. Fans and critics alike called it an emotional farewell to one of rock’s most iconic bands. But Manson’s appearance was the night’s one major blemish, at least in the eyes of many fans.
A Divided Audience
Some supporters of Manson have pushed back against the outrage, arguing that he hasn’t been convicted of any crimes and deserves a chance to move on. Others believe his presence, even in video form, was inappropriate for a globally streamed event celebrating a band with deep cultural importance.
Whether or not Manson anticipated the blowback, the reaction shows that his reputation remains radioactive in many corners of the rock community. The attempt to pay homage may have been sincere, but for a significant portion of viewers, it felt like an unwelcome intrusion.
