FRANK BELLO Says His Grandmother's Final Show Was ANTHRAX At Yankee Stadium: 'She Loved It'

Anthrax bassist Frank Bello has shared a personal memory from one of the biggest shows of his career, the Big Four concert at Yankee Stadium in 2011.
The show featured metal heavyweights Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, all performing together in the Bronx. For Bello, who grew up just 10 minutes from the stadium, the event was already meaningful.

But it became even more special because it was the last time his grandmother saw him play live.
“We got my family a booth up in the Yankee Stadium, one of those booth things up there with the glass and stuff,” Bello said. “I remember seeing her after the show, and she came with a wheelchair. We put her back in the car and stuff, and that was great. I still have her face saying that to me. ‘That was so great, Frank. I loved it.’”
Bello said his grandmother, Tina, and his mother, Rose, were the ones who supported him and his uncle, Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante, when they were starting out in music.
“They’re the ones that said, ‘Go do your thing. Don’t think about it. Just go be happy,’” Bello said.
That family support inspired the design of Bello’s new signature bass, the NC-4 Frank Bello, made in collaboration with Spector. The bass features a metallic purple finish named Tina Rose, in honor of both women.
“Wherever I go with this bass around the world, they’re always gonna be there,” he said.
The 2011 Yankee Stadium show was part of a historic series of Big Four concerts, celebrating the legacy of 1980s thrash metal. For Bello, the event was not only a career highlight but also a rare moment to share his music with the people who helped him get there.
“It was one of the highlights of my career,” he said.
