Summary
  • A fan brought onstage at a Green Day concert played Oasis’ Wonderwall instead of Good Riddance, leading to his removal by security.
  • Billie Joe Armstrong took back the guitar and finished the performance himself after expressing clear frustration.
  • Liam Gallagher reacted on social media, calling Wonderwall the ‘best song of the night’ as Oasis prepares for their reunion tour.

A Green Day concert in Luxembourg took an unexpected turn this week after a fan brought onstage tried to play the wrong song.

The incident happened Monday during the band’s Saviors Tour stop at the Luxexpo in Luxembourg.

As part of a recurring tradition, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, 53, invited a fan onstage to join the band for their final song, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”.

It didn’t go as planned.

Instead of Green Day, the fan played Oasis

Armstrong handed over a guitar and began showing the fan the chords to the 1997 Green Day track. But when the fan started strumming the opening chords to “Wonderwall” by Oasis, the mood shifted.

“Are you f–king kidding me?” Armstrong said, laughing at first but clearly irritated. A video of the moment shared to Instagram shows the singer trying to bring the fan back to the correct chords.

He told him, “You told me you could play this one!” before stopping altogether when the Oasis song continued.

Another clip posted on TikTok shows Armstrong shaking his head, taking the guitar away, and motioning for security. The fan was escorted off stage.

“Nice try. Wrong song,” Armstrong said into the mic, before finishing the show by performing “Good Riddance” himself.

Mixed reactions online

Videos of the moment quickly circulated across social media. Some users criticized the fan for wasting the opportunity.

“Why do people keep taking once in a lifetime opportunities from real Green Day fans?” one person wrote on Instagram.

Another added, “He not only ruined his own shot, but also took someone else’s place. That’s rough.”

Others saw the moment as a harmless prank.

“Kinda funny if you ask me,” one commenter said. “It’s like a live Rickroll. Imagine being the guy who Rickrolled Green Day onstage.”

Armstrong seemed more annoyed than amused in the video, but he still kept the show going. The band closed out the concert without further issues.

Liam Gallagher responds

The stunt caught the attention of Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, who saw the video and posted about it on X (formerly Twitter).

“Best song of the night,” Gallagher joked in a post the next morning.

His brother Noel Gallagher has also weighed in on similar situations in the past. In a 2022 interview, he encouraged bands to cover Oasis songs more often.

“The Foo Fighters should definitely do a couple,” Noel said. “Green Day could do more than one or two. Radiohead too. Let’s be honest, it’d be a better night out.”

Green Day is used to chaos

This isn’t the first time Green Day has had an awkward moment with fans.

At the 2023 Hurricane Festival in Germany, Armstrong stopped mid-song during “Jesus of Suburbia” after someone in the crowd sprayed him with a water gun. He flipped off the audience, confronted the person, and shouted “I’ll beat your a–!” before returning to the song.

The most infamous Green Day moment dates back to Woodstock ‘94, when a mud fight broke out during their set. Fans jumped the barricades and rushed the stage. In the chaos, a security guard mistook bassist Mike Dirnt for a fan and tackled him, knocking out some of his teeth.

Despite the occasional incident, Green Day remains one of the most successful punk bands of the last three decades. The group has sold over 74 million records and won multiple Grammy Awards. Armstrong, Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool continue to tour and release music.

In May, the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Oasis returns after 16 years

The timing of the incident is interesting. Oasis is just days away from launching their highly anticipated reunion tour. After a 16-year breakup, the Gallagher brothers are sharing a stage again.

The group announced their return last August with an Instagram post: “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over.”

Their Live ‘25 tour kicks off this weekend with back-to-back shows at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. A total of 41 shows are scheduled.

The band last played together in 2009. That year, Liam Gallagher canceled a performance at the V Festival, reportedly due to laryngitis. The band was scheduled to perform at Rock en Seine in Paris days later but never showed up. Two hours later, Noel released a short message online.

“It is with some sadness and great relief… I quit Oasis tonight,” he wrote. “I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

Liam denied the hangover rumor, saying he had a doctor-confirmed illness. A lawsuit followed. Eventually, Noel apologized, and the case was dropped.

After Oasis split, Liam formed Beady Eye, which released two albums before ending in 2014. Noel launched his solo career with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
