Slipknot's Jim Root Says He’s Ready to Leak 'Look Outside Your Window'
After a decade of delays, Jim hints at leaking the long-awaited album on YouTube himself.
- Jim Root jokes about leaking Slipknot’s long-delayed album, Look Outside Your Window, on YouTube.
- The album, recorded during the 2008 All Hope Is Gone sessions, has been described as having a Radiohead-like sound.
- Originally planned for release in 2019, the project remains in limbo, with Jim admitting he hasn’t listened to it in over a decade.
The wait for Look Outside Your Window has dragged on so long, it’s practically become folklore at this point. A decade or more of teasing, false promises, and cryptic updates, and here we are, still empty-handed. Sure, the album’s reportedly been done for ages, but the band hasn’t bothered to release it. And now it seems the frustration is bubbling over—even among the Slipknot camp itself.
Guitarist Jim Root recently spoke to Metal Hammer and threw a bit of shade at the endless delay. He suggested the holdup might have something to do with M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan obsessing over the mix. Perfectionist tendencies? Sure, but Root’s patience seems to be wearing thin, as he half-joked about leaking the damn thing himself.
“Man, I keep telling Clown I’m just gonna throw it up on YouTube and drop a link on Instagram or something. He’s like, ‘Don’t, dude. Just don’t.’”
— More SLIPKNOT News:
If you’re not familiar with this mythical album, here’s the gist: it’s a relic from Slipknot’s All Hope Is Gone sessions back in 2008. The lineup includes Clown, Corey Taylor, Jim Root, and DJ Sid Wilson, but calling it a Slipknot album feels like a stretch. Word on the street is that it’s more of a side project with a sound some have likened to Radiohead. Now whether that means it’s a bold experiment or a colossal misstep is anyone’s guess, because, well, we’ve never actually heard it.
Originally slated for release on Christmas Day 2019, it predictably missed that deadline. Since then, the band has dangled promises of an “imminent release” every so often, only to leave fans twiddling their thumbs. Meanwhile, this record remains little more than a carrot on a stick for the devoted maggots.
Root himself seems almost detached from the project at this point. In the same Metal Hammer interview, he admitted that he barely remembers what the album sounds like. After all, it’s been over a decade since it was recorded.
“I don’t even remember what any of that stuff sounds like, because it’s been so long since we recorded it. I don’t think I’ve listened to it in probably 10 years. Maybe I’ll go find [Clown] after we’re done talking and say, ‘Let’s listen to Look Outside Your Window and release it tonight…’”
Jim’s suggestion might sound like a joke, but given the circumstances, it also feels like a not-so-subtle nudge. After all, how long can you tweak an album before you’re just spinning your wheels? At some point, even the most loyal fans are going to stop caring—if they haven’t already.
If Look Outside Your Window ever sees the light of day, it’ll be interesting to see whether it lives up to the myth. Will it be a hidden gem, or will it leave listeners scratching their heads? One thing’s for sure: this album is stuck in release limbo, and unless someone pulls a Jim Root and leaks it, it might stay there forever.
