The Gist

Nu metal’s elder statesmen, Korn, threw a massive party this past weekend in Los Angeles. Their 30th Anniversary bash at BMO Stadium was less of a concert and more of a nu metal reunion, complete with thousands of fans who still remember when baggy jeans and wallet chains were a statement. Announced way back in March (because, of course, we needed six months to mentally prepare), the show wasn’t just about Korn—it was a full-on festival. Joining them were Evanescence, Gojira, Spiritbox, and even Daron Malakian with his not-so-subtly named band Scars On Broadway. Oh, and let’s not forget the kids in Vended—because, apparently, the nu metal torch must be passed down whether we like it or not.

Jonathan Davis, being his emotional self, made sure to let everyone know how much he loves his fans and how grateful he is. He even broke out some tour debut tracks to keep things fresh, as fresh as a 30-year-old band can manage. “Coming Undone,” “Somebody Someone,” and “Helmet in the Bush” were dusted off, the latter being a gem they hadn’t played since 2015.

The night hit peak nostalgia when Amy Lee joined them for “Freak On A Leash,” which probably sent every elder millennial in the crowd back to 1998 in the best possible way. You could almost hear the Hot Topic cash registers ringing.

But backstage, the real heartwarming moment came when Tetrarch’s lead guitarist, Diamond Rowe, handed Brian “Head” Welch her signature guitar. It was like the rock equivalent of a handshake between generations. Rowe got all sentimental about it, explaining how she grew up watching Head, how Korn made her feel like she belonged, and how giving him that guitar was a dream come true.

In her words:

“Watching Head on stage since I was a kid and listening to every Korn record brought me a feeling of belonging and confidence that nothing else did. I felt like I was a part of something magical – and it was a feeling that was too powerful to be a coincidence.”

“This weekend, I got to say thank you, not only with words, but by giving that gift that I hoped I would be able to give ever since I was that young kid – my own signature guitar3 days after it came out."

“It was just meant to be.”

Heartwarming, sure. But let’s not pretend this wasn’t also a great PR moment for that new signature guitar. Still, you’ve got to hand it to Rowe. Living the dream and handing your hero a guitar with your name on it? That’s rock and roll.
