Metallica Pays Tribute to Dedicated Fan Who Died During Edmonton Concert

The band honors "Viking," a fan who passed away from health complications in the VIP Snake Pit.

The Gist

Metallica paid a solemn tribute yesterday to one of their own— a dedicated fan, known as Lorne or simply “Viking,” who tragically passed away during their concert in Edmonton, Alberta.

Positioned in the VIP section, the Snake Pit—a prime spot for die-hard fans—Viking was carried out by EMS on a stretcher. Despite efforts at CPR, his life could not be saved.

No accusations or finger-pointing are being directed at Metallica here; it was simply a case of fate meeting a pre-existing medical condition, as one of Viking’s friends clarified on a fan group, stating that his death was linked to his health, not the concert itself.

When Metallica learned of Viking’s passing, they took to their social media to express their respect and condolences:

Friday night, August 23rd, in Edmonton we lost a Metallica family member at the show. He died due to health conditions. Leaving the earthly body and onto the next adventure. Very sad when death happens, but we’re touched that he spent some of his final, hopefully joyful, time with us. Our condolences to the family and friends of Lorne ‘Viking.’ With Love and Respect, Metallica

There’s a strange poignancy here. It’s undeniably tragic, but if you’ve got to go, slipping away in the middle of a Metallica show holds a certain rawness. In the afterlife, maybe Viking gets a nod from St. Peter himself— a small salute for checking out in the throes of heavy metal. That’s about as metal as it gets.

Our thoughts go out to Viking’s family and friends. Here’s hoping he rests in power.
