The Gist

The year 1999 gave us Slipknot’s chaotic, self-titled debut—an album that didn’t just make waves; it practically slapped the metal world across the face. Now, 25 years later, they’re not only performing to mark the occasion but teasing what sounds like the mother of all reissues. And who’s leading the charge? None other than M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan, the band’s self-appointed archivist and hoarder-in-chief.

In an interview with Metal Hammer, Clown revealed he’s elbow-deep in the band’s vault, curating an “expansive” package. “I’m fully involved with putting together a reissue package, because I’m the band caretaker,” he explained, making sure no one questions who’s in charge of all the dusty tapes. According to him, he’s got everything: DAT tapes from their first shows, unreleased mixes, and even old video recordings from sessions at SR Audio and Indigo Ranch. Apparently, some of these gems were dismissed back in the day but, now? They’re golden—at least in his words.

As Clown put it: “They would never have been listened to 25 years ago, but now that the golden egg has been laid, and everyone knows it, you’re not going to listen to another mix and go, ‘This is better.’ You’re just gonna go, ‘Wow, this is Slipknot, 25 years ago.’” Bold statement, huh? Let’s hope the “golden egg” doesn’t turn out to be just scrambled leftovers.

What can fans expect in this reissue? Clown promises new artwork, photos from the era, and rare recordings so “punk rock” that you might just smell the sweat from those early board tapes. There’s talk of video content, audio surprises, and “the best of all things Slipknot.” Sounds impressive on paper, but let’s not forget, this isn’t the band’s first attempt at reissuing the debut. This time, though, if Clown delivers on his lofty claims, it might actually justify the hype.

While fans hold their breath for the reissue, Slipknot is still burning up stages worldwide. Their 2024 itinerary is packed, with stops ranging from Des Moines (home turf) to London. And yes, there’s still time to grab tickets—unless you enjoy standing in the parking lot.
