Slipknot is building anticipation with a cryptic online campaign that points toward a special 25th anniversary edition of their self-titled 1999 debut album.

The band has launched a mysterious new website, 742617000027.net, named after the short instrumental track that opens their first album. The site contains a text box and the phrase “Worse forwards than backwards.” This same line recently appeared on Slipknot’s official Instagram page, alongside what looks like an early version of their debut record.

Fans quickly began trying to unlock the site by typing in various passwords. If you enter something incorrect, the site responds with a blunt message: “You have nothing to contribute so stay the f. out.”

A Reddit user cracked the code by entering “comeplaydying”, a phrase longtime fans will recognize from past merchandise and the limited Digipak version of the album. Unlocking the site this way leads to a warning screen that says:

“Intrusion Detected. You are being observed. By continuing, you consent to: Your actions being tracked Your data being harvested And your identity being marked for future contact. You also agree to immediate ownership and full responsibility for the contents of the box, should it find you.”

Behind that message is a blurred image of the band from their early days, with members like Joey Jordison and Chris Fehn visible. A countdown timer sits beneath the image and is set to expire on July 21. Background music also plays while the page is open.

The teaser campaign originally began with a different domain, youcantkillme.com, launched in early 2024. That site is no longer active and now redirects to the current one, deepening the mystery and increasing speculation.

Strong Hints at a Reissue

Slipknot has not officially confirmed what will be revealed on July 21. But all signs suggest a 25th anniversary reissue of their debut album is on the way.

Their self-titled debut, released in June 1999, helped launch them into mainstream success. The record has since gone double platinum in the United States and is considered one of the defining albums of early 2000s metal.

In September 2024, percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan spoke openly about the reissue in an interview with Metal Hammer. He said:

“I’m fully involved with putting together a reissue package, because I’m the band caretaker. I’m the one that held everything over the years: all the DAT tapes from the [sound]board from all our first shows, all the videotapes from studio sessions at SR Audio and Indigo Ranch, different test mixes that we gave to other people that we said ‘No’ to at that time and that were never released, but are amazing.”

He added that many of these recordings might not have made sense 25 years ago, but they’re valuable now because they show Slipknot’s raw beginnings.

Crahan also hinted that the reissue would include “new artwork, new photos from the time, punk rock board tapes, and video documents.” In short, the project appears to include a mix of music, visuals, and behind-the-scenes content from the band’s early days.

Looking Back While Moving Forward

This isn’t the first time Slipknot has revisited the 1999 album. A 10th anniversary edition was released on September 9, 2009.

That version included extra songs, music videos, and a full live set from the Dynamo Open Air festival. A deluxe version featured band memorabilia and a note from vocalist Corey Taylor.

Slipknot has been touring to mark the 25th anniversary of the debut album since April 2024. Their most recent show took place June 29 in Portugal.

They have only one remaining performance scheduled so far, a slot at the INKcarceration Festival later this month in the United States.
