The Gist

Some collaborations leave you scratching your head, and this one’s no exception. Slipknot, the metal world’s masked enigma, has somehow found itself linked to Atlus, the studio behind the Shin Megami Tensei series. The connection? Masks. Because of course, Slipknot would find a way to bring demonic headgear into a marketing stunt for a Japanese RPG.

Jim Ojala, the man behind Ojala Productions, has taken on the task of creating three masks inspired by the game’s dark and twisted demons. If the name rings a bell, Ojala and his team have worked on some of Slipknot’s infamous nightmare-inducing headpieces. In the first of two videos released earlier today, Ojala walked viewers through how he and his crew turned designs of Gurulu, Daemon, and Loup-Garou—demons from the game—into actual wearable art. Think of it as cosplay on steroids.

What’s next? Apparently, tomorrow’s follow-up video will feature the band itself. Will Corey Taylor and the gang actually wear these masks? Or are they just along for the marketing ride? It’s not clear yet, but the idea of Slipknot sporting demon masks from a JRPG is absurd enough to be… almost believable.

If you’ve ever dipped your toes into the Shin Megami Tensei universe, you already know the series deals in all things grim and unholy. Its roster of demons is either brilliantly eerie or completely off-the-rails ridiculous—depending on the game. Some designs scream “terrifying genius.” Others? Let’s just say Mara exists, and leave it at that.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is set to launch June 14 on a lineup of platforms that covers practically every gaming device you own: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and good ol’ Windows PC. Preorders are live now, if you’re the type who likes to lock in your regrets early.

It’s an odd pairing, this Slipknot-Atlus affair, but stranger things have happened. At least Ojala knows how to whip up killer masks.
