The Gist

The legendary metal misfits have stirred the pot again. Hot on the heels of announcing three summer shows with heavyweights like KoRn, Avenged Sevenfold, and Deftones, they pulled a classic move: double the dates, double the hype. Tickets for the original lineup of gigs sold out faster than you could yell “Wake up!” prompting the band to add an extra show in each city. That makes six stops for 2025 so far.

Here comes the kicker. Over the weekend, System of a Down dropped a cryptic teaser on social media. The short clip featured an eye slowly opening alongside the iconic bark from their 2001 anthem ‘Chop Suey!’: “WAKE UP!” Subtle? Hardly. Fans clicking the accompanying link were taken to the band’s official site—no earth-shattering revelations there, just a signup for their newsletter. Big tease or smart marketing? You decide.

Naturally the rumor mill is churning. Some fans are dreaming of a ‘Toxicity’ anniversary tour, though let’s be real—it’s turning 24 in 2025, not exactly a milestone worth dusting off the party hats for. A full-blown world tour feels more likely, especially with these teaser breadcrumbs. New music? That’s where things get murkier than Daron Malakian’s riffs.

The band hasn’t released a full album since their 2005 twin juggernauts, ‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize.’ Serj Tankian has openly admitted his complicated relationship with those records. Speaking to Metal Hammer, he confessed, “I had, to a certain degree, emotionally checked out of the band while making them.” It’s not the first time he’s hinted at losing steam, as he’s previously aired similar feelings in interviews and his memoir, ‘Down With The System.’ But here’s the twist: in a recent interview, Serj suggested that a new record could represent a fresh start. Bold words, but does he mean it?

Shavo Odadjian, ever the pragmatist, seems less convinced. When asked about Serj’s comments, Shavo admitted, “I don’t know what he means by that. We’ve always gone in unexpected directions. If it works for one of us but not the others, it doesn’t happen. It has to click for all four of us.” Fair enough. The bassist also warned fans not to jump to conclusions: “Don’t turn this into clickbait like, ‘Shavo says there’s a new record coming!’ If it happens, it happens.”

And let’s not forget, System of a Down did break their 15-year recording drought with two singles in 2020: ‘Protect the Land’ and ‘Genocidal Humanoidz.’ Those tracks, however, were more about supporting Armenia than heralding a creative resurgence.

So what’s next? A tour? New music? Both? With System of a Down, it’s always a gamble. One thing’s for sure: they’ll keep us guessing until the last minute. Classic SOAD.
